The Torbay Express
Sunday 9th September 2007

This is one of the most Extraordinary and Scenic Railway Journeys in Europe

Once again the old steam trains are back running between Bristol and the English Riviera resorts of Paignton and beautiful Kingswear in the south Hams district of glorious Devon.

Following a sell out in previous years we are delighted to be able to offer ten Sundays during the months of July, August and September. There is a lot to see on the way as we steam from the magnificent
railway cathedral of Bristol Temple Meads, through Weston super Mare across the lush Somerset Levels to Taunton. Then over the remote Blackdown Hills and down the Exe Valley to Exeter, before heading along the Exe estuary and along the famous sea wall to Dawlish. Past the stunning Teign estuary and on down to the English Riviera resorts of Torquay and Paignton with their disparate attractions, before steaming past the beaches and coves of Torbay.
We then climb along the steeply graded Paignton & Dartmouth railway through the wooded estate once owned by Agatha Christie, before passing the majestic bulk of HMS Britannia- not a ship, but the college that has trained generations of naval officers to protect these islands from the sea, and finally into the waterside station at Kingswear.

Included in the fare is a journey by foot ferry across the river to the historic town of Dartmouth.  Dartmouth has plenty of shops and cafes to explore or why not while away your afternoon enjoying an ice-cream topped with clotted cream and watching the activities on the water?
