The Dorset Coast Express
Friday 1st August 2008

A summer day out to the seaside resort of Weymouth is on offer this coming August as we are steam hauled by the pride of the GWR,  King Class locomotive No. 6024 ‘King Edward 1’

Leaving Bristol Temple Meads we steam on to the “Heart of Wessex” line through Bath Spa and Westbury, Yeovil, Dorchester and finally Weymouth. This line takes us through some wonderful scenery with stiff climbs to test ‘King Edward 1’ along the way. On arrival at Yeovil we bid farewell to the ‘King’ as she is turned and serviced for the return journey from Weymouth later in the day. We then continue on to Weymouth behind a diesel locomtive.

Weymouth is a classic seaside resort with a fine Georgian seafront forming the backdrop to an idyllic arc of golden sands and leisure harbour, which nestles perfectly alongside the rugged Isle of Portland.

There may even be time to sample an open top bus ride to Portland Bill with its Lighthouse and Visitor centre. Portland is famously known for its stone and panoramic views of the Dorset Jurassic Coast.   Weymouth has many pubs, restaurants and amusements all within walking distance of the Railway station.  You might like to sample a glass of ale from the Dorset Brewery Co. Ltd. at Brewers Quay or alternatively enjoy a walk or donkey ride along the beach.

Following our break at Weymouth we will leave with a symphony of noise from ‘King Edward 1’ as she attacks Upwey bank which is as steep as 1 in 50 in places. After a brief pause for water at Frome we continue our homeward journey back to Bristol Temple Meads setting down as outwards.
